Home is where the heart is and Albert Garcia is ready to have his heart back as the new chief of the Levelland Police Department.
The Levelland City Council officially appointed Garcia to the position at Monday’s meeting. Garcia’s first day will be June 26.
Rick Osburn, city manager, announced the Garcia’s hiring on Friday, May 26, after a three-month long search, which the city utilized Strategic Government Resources to conduct a nationwide search for candidates to fill the position.
At the February 20 city council meeting, Osburn said using the firm would cost the city approximately $27,000.
“That’s a lot of money, but as I’ve indicated, we’re talking about a third of our city employees and a $3 million budget,” Osburn said at the February meeting.
Garcia was chosen of a pool of about three dozen applicants, Osburn said.
Garcia is a former employee of the Levelland Police Department, starting his law enforcement career here in 1995 after graduating from South Plains College.
Most recently, Garcia has served as the police chief in Littlefield for the past two years. He said though he will miss Littlefield and the relationships he has developed there, he is excited about the future.
“I’m going to miss Littlefield and have made some good friends here,” Garcia said. “But when it comes to my profession and what direction I want to take my career, Levelland is where I want to be.”
He said he always wanted to return to Levelland as the police chief and even continued his education in hopes of doing just that.
Above all emotions Garcia is feeling about returning to his hometown, he is most excited to be reunited with the community.
“Levelland has always been home to us so just being home is exciting,” Garcia said. “For the job itself, I’m most excited about is having the opportunity to make a difference for a community I’ve always cared dearly for.”
