Mayor Barbra Pinner signed a proclamation recognizing the Juneteenth Celebration, slated for June 16-18, Monday at the Levelland City Council meeting.
The proclamation reads, "Juneteenth affords not only black Americans, but all Americans a special opportunity to reflect back 150 years; and whereas, in order to preserve the oral and written history of Juneteenth, which is the oldest celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States, dating back to June 19, 1865, when union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the war was ended, freeing the enslaved and this was two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's emancipation proclamation which became official January 1, 1863.
"And, whereas, in order that we as a city, state and nation may never forget the harsh treatment and injustices blacks experienced under slavery; and, whereas, Juneteenth today celebrates the freedom and achievement of black Americans, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures, as it takes on a more national, symbolic, and even global perspective, and the events of 1865 are not forgotten.
"And, whereas, it is important to continue a dialouge of the realization of what Juneteenth historically means to all Americans, to promote racial healing, reconciliation, restoration and justice; whereas the focus of this 28th annual event's theme is "Living Together as Brothers.
"Now, therefore, Barbra Pinner, Mayor of Levelland, do hereby proclaim June 16 through June 18, 2017 as Juneteenth Celebration."
This year's Juneteenth Celebration will be held Friday, June 16 through Saturday, June 17.
A barbeque meal will be served Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Northside City Park. The celebration will conclude Saturday night with a fashion and talent show “Attitudes in Bloom” to be held in the Carver Cafeteria.
The event is open to everyone who would like to participate.
