Firemen Respond To Blaze
1/31/2018 5:09:12 PM

Levelland firemen spent over an hour on the scene of an accidental fire that destroyed a tree line that was nearly a quarter mile long on the west side of Farm to Market 2646 and south of Ellis Wednesday afternoon.
The fire was reported by motorists on Highway 114 who at first thought it was a structure fire around 4 p.m. The fire began at Pat Tucker’s welding show and rapidly spread eastward, quickly engulfing the evergreen trees, sending lots of smoke skyward.
A quick-thinking neighbor, Alan Wisdom, saw the fire and send a tractor and three-point tandem to the scene, plowing inside the tree line and stopping the fire from spreading to a house, well-house and antique farm equipment  on the property, which belongs to Norm and Betty Freeman.
The fire department dispatched three fire-fighting units to the blaze and Hockley County Sheriff’s deputies closed the highway until the blaze and resulting smoke could be brought under control.
