A recount in two local elections in Cochran County changed votes in both races, but not enough to avoid a runoff election.

In the county commissioners’ race for Precinct 2, Bruce Heflin’s vote count changed from 60 votes to 63 votes. Matt Evans’ votes did not change from the original 81 votes earned.

In this race, Cheryl Butler, Cochran County Elections Administrator said Evans had called for the recount, hoping to avoid a runoff election.

In the county commissioners’ race for Precinct 4, the votes for both Jake Timmons and Reynaldo Morin changed.

Timmons’ vote count went from 41 to 44 while Morin’s vote count went from 43 to 45.

There will also be a runoff election for commissioner of Precinct 4.

Butler said Timmons called for the recount in the race for commissioner of Precinct 4.

She said the candidate who requests the recount is responsible for paying for it. However, if the count changes, the candidate is refunded their money.

Butler said the runoff election will be held May 22 and early voting will be held May 14 through May 18.

The only early voting place for voters in Cochran County is at the county clerk’s office at the Cochran County Courthouse in Morton.

Polling places for the runoff election on election day are as follows:

Places to vote on election day in Cochran County include:
–The basement of the Cochran County Courthouse, located at 100 N. Main Street for Precinct 4; and
--Whiteface Elementary School, 315 Arthur Street for Precinct 2.
