Volunteers from the American Red Cross will be joined by local first responders from the Levelland Police Department, Levelland Fire Department, Hockley County Sheriff’s Office and Covenant Levelland EMS Saturday for a preparedness event outside the 911 call center at 603 5th Street.

In recognition of September as National Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross, along with local first responder agencies, will provide information on what to do in an emergency or disaster situation.

The event will cover how families should sit down together and decide how they will get in contact with each other, where they will go and what they will do in an emergency.

Families will learn how to prepare an emergency preparedness plan and follow it. The event will also tell attendees what they need for an emergency supply kit and why it will be important in a disaster or emergency situation.

David Corder, emergency management coordinator for Levelland and Hockley County, said the Red Cross will also be giving out free smoke alarms and arranging times for firefighters to install the smoke alarms.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 1 p.m.
