County continues talks on cell phone policy

County commissioners continued their discussion of the county’s cell phone policy on Monday, but postponed action for the time being.

The county currently pay $25 a month to certain employees, including elected officials, who need a cell phone as part of their job requirement.

Commissioner J.L. ‘Whitey’ Barnett said that $40 a month seemed like a reasonable amount.

Commissioner Curtis Thrash said the amount needed to be the same for employees in all precincts.

Sheriff R.C. Cheek said a proposal to increase the rates to $40 and $75, respectively, would be OK.

Commissioner Tommy Clevenger said leaving the base reimbursement at $25 would not be enough.

Clevenger said that some employees, such as foremen, need to be paid a higher rate because they are on-call 24/7.
