Convenience store evacuated when explosive device found

A convenience store was evacuated Friday morning after a suspicious looking bag was found at the business.

The bag contained a detonating cap that is commonly used in the oilfield, said Police Chief Toney Cowan.

Police were dispatched to the Town & Country store on Clubview Drive at 6:43 a.m.

Two employees who were there left the business, and police and firefighters blocked off all approaches to the businesses.

Lubbock County was contacted and a bomb squad was sent to Levelland. It arrived at the scene before 9 a.m.

Squad members entered the store, retrieved the bag and placed it in a blast-resistant container.
The building was OK’d for use shortly before 9:30 a.m.

The bomb squad was  scheduled to turn the device over to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives for analysis.
