Funding requests, new job OK’d by council

Funding requests, including one for a new city employee’s position, were OK’d Monday by the city council.

Mary Siders, Chamber of Commerce president, said four requests had been submitted for funds from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund.

The requests were recommended for approval by the HOT Committee.

The first one, for $495, would be for in-room directories  at Best Western. The directories will promote local businesses and events, Siders said.

She said the committee had also recommended that $5,000 be approved for a new event: The Babe Ruth Fast Pitch Girls State Tournament.

It will held here June 28-30 and should draw 975-1,000 people to Levelland.

‘It is a brand-new event for this community…a golden opportunity,’ she said. ‘It will fill our hotels.’

The event will have a 3-5 day impact on the city’s economy.

Councilman Max Ledesma asked where the tournament would be held.
