Caution urged when using fireworks on Fourth of July

While there is no burn ban in effect this July 4th in Hockley County, residents are urged to be extremely cautious when setting off fireworks.

‘The first thing is personal safety. If you’re going to shoot fireworks, be careful,’ said Levelland Fire Chief Otis Stark. ‘Don’t hold fireworks while lighting them. Just be aware of your surrounding.’

It is also a good idea to have a source of water in case a fire starts, Stark said.

The recent rainfall has improved range conditions but it doesn’t take much to ignite dry grass, he said.

‘I believe we are wetter than last Fourth of July,’ Stark said. ‘It’s possible we could get more rain between now and the Fourth, which is good.’

There are several safety tips and other considerations that people should take when buying.
