Hockley County’s unemployment rate grew to 5.0 percent in June, up from 4.5 percent in May, according to figures from the Texas Workforce Commission.
The county’s unemployment rate is still lower than the June, 2012 figure of 5.2 percent, and significantly lower than the June, 2011 figure of 6.4 percent and the June, 2010 number of 6.9 percent.
Even more significant is that the labor force and the number of people working has continued to grow during the past four years.
In June, 2010, the labor force was 12,383 people and the number of people working was 11,528.
Over the past four years, the labor force has grown by 1,285 people and the number of people working has increased by 1,453 people.
TWC reported there were 13,668 people in the county’s labor force, of which 12,981 were employed and 687 were unemployed.
Cochran County’s unemployment rate for June was 7.7 percent, also up a half of a percentage point from the 7.2 percent reported in May. TWC reported 1,373 people in the county’s labor force of which 1,267 were working and 106 were unemployed.
