LEDC hires attorney, considers agreement

A city board agreed Wednesday to hire a Lubbock  attorney for a possible lawsuit but balked at paying the City of Levelland $6,000 a year to use its facilities.

Levelland Economic Development Corporation board members spent an hour in closed session before authorizing staff to hire the Brooks Firm PLLC to represent them.

Shawn Kirkpatrick, LEDC executive director, told the board that it was in an ‘undesirable situation’ regarding a possible lawsuit.

At a recent city council meeting, Mayor Waymon Jackson said nothing had been done about ordering an oil company to stop pumping water at the Levelland Industrial Rail Park.

Chi Energy pumps water at the park for its oilfield flood operations.

Kirkpatrick has said that Chi Energy has a previous right to the water that it obtained from Levelland Compress before the LEDC bought the land for the rail park.

He pointed out that, because Richard Husen represents Levelland as the city attorney, it would be best to seek outside legal representation.
