Physical therapist retires after 40 years with hospital

Opportunity brought Lex Gillean to Levelland and all of his other blessings followed.

Gillean, who has worked 40 years as a physical therapist for the hospital here, retired Friday from Covenant Hospital Levelland.

Asked why he worked so long, the 70-year-old grandfather laughed and said, ‘I had too much fun to leave. It’s just been great.’

Gillean grew up in Stamford and he was working as a physical therapist in Abilene when a former employer mentioned there was an opening in Levelland.

‘I came here and interviewed,’ he recalled. ‘It was a very nice hospital. I think this was the best opportunity.’

He was accepted and began working at what was then called Cooke Memorial Hospital in October 1973.

The hospital was then owned by Hospital Corporation of America.
