Fire Chief Otis Stark was reinstated to his job Monday amid a clamor that City Manager Rick Osburn should resign.
Stark was fired two weeks ago for allegedly trying to dispose of a combine at the fire department’s Alamo Road training field.
But city attorney Richard Husen told a packed city council chambers that the action removing Stark would not be taken.
‘Because of the ambiguity and the confusion regarding this item, and based on information we’ve received,’ Husen said, ‘the city has determined that the adverse personnel action proposed against Chief Stark should not and will not be taken.’
A crowd of 90-100 people broke out in loud applause.
Husen said the item had been donated and was owned by the volunteer firefighters. It was never added to the fire department inventory, and could be disposed of by the volunteers ‘without violating city policy regarding disposal.’
He added that the rules regarding donations of cash or equipment to the volunteers needs to be clarified.
