Proposals limiting public comments during city council meetings were shot down during a testy meeting Monday night.
City Manager Rick Osburn said he had been approached by three council members about drafting rules for citizen participation during meetings.
Mayor Waymon Jackson said the proposal was a way to exclude citizens from speaking during meetings.
‘We’re going to skip this,’ Jackson said. ‘As long as I’m mayor, anyone can talk. We’re not going to act on this at all. This is a rubber stamp and I’m not going to allow it.’
Councilman Larry Davidson said the proposed rules were a way to ‘stay legal.’
‘You’re assuming responsibility,’ Davidson asked the mayor.
‘You bet I am,’ said Jackson.
‘We’ve got to follow state and city charter laws,’ Davidson replied. ‘We haven’t been following them.’
