County cotton harvest reaches 229,000 bales

No production records were set but the 2013 cotton crop was  – in some cases – better than expected.

Total production for the six cotton gins in Hockley County will top slightly more than 229,000 bales.

With one exception, all county gins have finished operations on the 2013 crop.

United Cotton Growers at Arnett ginned the most fiber of six gins in Hockley County.

The gin completed its run on Jan. 9, producing 93,215 bales for the season. That number was down from 102,525 units in 2012.

‘It was, for the most part, a good grading crop,’ said gin manager Paul Wilson. ‘It yielded better than expected on the irrigated land.’

But an early freeze in October hurt the grades and color of cotton that was planted late, Wilson added.
