Anton city manager retires after 33 years of service

Larry Conkin didn’t plan on moving back to Anton after he graduated from high school and then Texas Tech University.

But circumstances brought him back to his hometown at the start of the 1980s.

Conkin, who became Anton city manager in 1980, retired Friday.

He turned 65 last month and figured it was time to step down.

‘I’ve got enough work in my back yard to keep me busy,’ Conkin said, laughing. ‘I’ve been hauling junk home for 34 years.’

Conkin was honored with a retirement party Thursday afternoon.

Earlier, he was presented with a watch by Mayor Blake Cate.

The mayor also presented him with a unique piece of jewelry – a water meter cover attached to a metal chain.

Conkin didn’t wear it for a photograph.
