City man dies during hot check roundup

A city man apparently killed himself Thursday night when police attempted to serve an arrest warrant for a hot check at his Fifth Street home.

Lloyd Wayne Halbrooks, 44, died from a single gunshot wound, according to a police news release.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

Two officers went to Halbrooks’ home shortly after 7 p.m. They repeatedly knocked on the door until he answered. However, he refused to come out outside and brandished a .22-caliber revolver.

The officers ran and took cover. When they heard a single gunshot, one officer fired his handgun three times at the residence, a report said.

The lawmen entered the home and found Halbrooks dead, lying on the kitchen floor. He appeared to have a single gunshot  wound to the head.

Justice of the Peace Brenda Nock pronounced him dead and ordered an autopsy.
