Autopsy shows man’s death due to delirium and trauma

A man who died last November after being arrested by police passed away as the result of ‘excited delirium with physical altercation.’

The Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death a homicide.

The autopsy was performed after 30-year-old Jason Valentine Lopez of Levelland died Nov. 6, 2013 at a Lubbock hospital.

However, Levelland Police Chief Toney Cowan said he is satisfied that his officers conducted themselves properly while making the arrest.

Cowan said his office turned over the investigation to the Texas Rangers.

‘We are awaiting the Rangers’ final report,’ he said.

An investigation into the death of Lopez was recently completed by Texas Ranger Dominic Zuniga.
