The problem of identity theft is growing and hurting more people than ever, authorities say.
‘It’s a big problem. It is a problem that we have seen grow over the last few years,’ said Clay Sanford, a spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service in North Texas.
The Levelland Police Department has received more complaints about identity theft, especially those involving tax returns, in the last few months than it normally does in a year, said Sgt. Detective Tammie McDonald.
‘This year we’re swamped by them,’ McDonald said.
The department normally handles 3-4 complaints a year about bogus tax returns being filed.
