A funding request was approved and the city council reviewed costly future improvements to Levelland’s water system Monday.
A request from Chamber of Commerce President Mary Siders for an additional $15,000 in Hotel Occupancy Tax funds was endorsed.
Siders said the request was on top of $10,000 that the council recently approved.
The funds will allow the city to ‘remain competitive’ in its efforts to attract the Tri-State High School Rodeo to Levelland.
Levelland is in competition with the City of Boerne on the rodeo.
Councilman Manuel Mendez Jr. asked Siders about the amount that Boerne bid.
Siders that amount is in a sealed bid.
The event would be held at the Mallet Event Center, but the county cannot waive fees on the rodeo because the facility was built through the use of bond money.
‘It’s an investment. The Mallet is doing everything in kind,’ she said. ‘It’s a great economic development tool. We have to remain aggressive.’
