Grand jury indicts 28 people

Indictments for drug possession, forgery and other offenses were returned against 28 defendants Wednesday in Levelland.

The grand jury indicted Steven Velez, 29, of Ropesville for possession of a controlled substance.

Velez was stopped by a state trooper on June 14, 2013 for driving with expired license plates.

The officer saw a glass pipe and a baggie containing  residue in plain view on the seat of Velez’s vehicle. The residue tested positive for methamphetamine.

Mandy Circle resident Kenny Dale Thornton, 39, was also indicted for possession of a controlled substance.

A peace officer stopped Thornton for speeding on Lacy Lane on May 8, 2013.

Thornton acted very nervous but gave the lawman permission to search his vehicle. A zipper bag containing .62 of a gram of meth was found on him, a report said.

Larry M. Schumacher, 44, of Levelland was indicted for possession of a controlled substance.
