County commissioners took two steps Monday toward bringing a wind turbine project to the county.
The officials unanimously passed a resolution approving creation of the Hockley County Wind Reinvestment Zone #1.
But a tax abatement agreement that would pave the way for Red Raider Wind LLC to begin building wind turbines in the county was deferred until another day.
If an abatement agreement is reached, Red Raider could start erecting as many as 40 turbines in an area northeast of Smyer. The zone approved Monday also includes an area west and southwest of Shallowater in Lubbock County.
County Judge Larry Sprowls said the county has used guidelines and criteria for tax abatements in the past, but those had lapsed.
