Two bids for asbestos abatement were accepted and 15 new employees were approved Thursday by the Levelland school board.
Trustees accepted a $24,000 bid from AML Environmental of Abilene for abatement of the north wing of South Elementary. A bid for $14,800 for abatement of the cafeteria flooring was also accepted.
However, work on the north wing means that first-grade students will not have carpet on their classroom floors when school begins next month, said Supt. Kelly Baggett.
He estimated that the affected classrooms will have ‘bare concrete’ floors through December.
The cafeteria will not be usable when school starts, he added.
Trustee Tania Moody said she was concerned about the welfare of the young students.
‘It’s not good timing,’ Baggett said. ‘We will do everything we can for the first grade.’
Trustees wondered if rugs could be made available. The possibility of floor mats was also discussed. No action was taken.
