Anton man arrested for murder

An Anton man remained in jail Tuesday, charged with the weekend stabbing death of his brother-in-law.

Cristoval Resendez, 25, was arraigned Tuesday for murder by Justice of the Peace Sue Coker.

Bond was set at $250,000.

Resendez is charged with fatally stabbing Kevin Funez of Honduras.

The incident occurred after 2 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at a Maurer Street residence.

The two men apparently got into a verbal altercation outside the victim’s home and scuffled.. Resendez went to his residence, returned and allegedly stabbed Funez multiple times, said Sheriff R.C. Cheek.

Resendez stabbed the victim 17 times, according to Texas Ranger Dominic Zuniga.

Family members called for an ambulance. When it did not arrive, they loaded the victim in a vehicle and began driving to Littlefield.

They met a Littlefield ambulance and Funez was loaded into it. The ambulance crew was unable to save the victim and he  died at the scene.

A justice of the peace from Littlefield was contacted and went to the ambulance.

Resendez suffered non-life- threatening injuries during the altercation. He was transported to the hospital here and then transferred to University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Cheek said he did not give Resendez a Miranda warning at the hospital here. He advised the Texas Rangers that his office did not have the manpower to provide two guards while Resendez was being treated at the hospital.

The Rangers apparently assumed custody for Resendez. One of them transported him from Lubbock to Levelland on Monday.

The Rangers are in charge of the investigation into the death.

An investigator with the Hockley County Sheriff’s Office is assisting.
