Going up in flames

Emergency personnel responded to a one-car accident that resulted in the vehicle bursting into flames Thursday evening. The accident was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies, ambulance personnel and firemen all reported to the accident scene northeast of Levelland on County Road. The driver, Gabriel Villarreal, 34, was taken to Covenant Hospital Levelland. The vehicle, a 2007 Buick Rendezvous, was engulfed in flames when firemen arrived. They quickly extinguished the flames but not before the fire had destroyed the vehicle, which was not insured. The vehicle, which was being driven south on County Road, flipped end-over-end twice before stopping upright in a CRP field. Fearing someone else might have been in the vehicle, emergency personnel searched around it after extinguishing the fire. Department of Public Safety Trooper Pete Ramos is handling the investigation and said charges are pending. (Staff Photo by Stephen Henry)
