The first freeze of the fall hit Hockley County and the region early Tuesday morning.
It arrived with a strong arctic cold front that promises to keep temperatures well below normal for the next few days.
The freeze occurred at 1:25 a.m. when the mercury dipped to 31.7 degrees at the Mesonet weather site just south of Levelland.
Temperatures continued to slide, reaching a low of 23.5 degrees at 7:20 a.m.
Last year, the first freeze occurred on Oct. 19.
In 2012, it came even earlier, arriving on Oct.8.
