Waylon Jennings’ nephew killed in one-vehicle crash

Waylon Jennings’ nephew died in a one-vehicle accident early Sunday morning west of Levelland.

Justin Duane Jennings, 25, died at the scene of the accident, which was approximately three miles west of Levelland on Texas 114.

The accident occurred after 1 a.m.

The Whiteface man was westbound in a Chevrolet pickup when it left the south side of the road and entered a bar ditch. The truck hit a tree, overturned and struck a second tree, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Jennings spearheaded the annual Waylon Jennings Birthday Bash, which was first held in 2012.

The event featured live bands and was designed to raise funds for research into finding a cure for diabetes, the disease which claimed the life of the late outlaw country music great in 2002.

It is unclear if the annual fund-raising event will continue.

‘I don’t know,’ said Whiteface City Secretary Belinda Terrell. ‘We’re just in limbo right now.’

Jennings worked for Jennings Hot Oil Truck in Whiteface. He also served on the Whiteface City Council.

‘He was always smiling,’ Terrell said. ‘He had deep dimples and was always smiling. He was good.’
