A petition calling for an election to legalize the sale of alcohol in Levelland is now in full swing.
Advocates for the issue began collecting signatures last week, and petitions were being circulated this week.
City Secretary Beth Walls confirmed that petitions were picked up from her office on Dec. 29.
The petition is for the sale of alcohol for off-premise consumption only.
A group called the ‘Levelland Committee for Economic Growth’ submitted an application to City Secretary Beth Walls last month.
It stated that the group had filed the application in compliance with the Texas Election Code to circulate petitions to qualified voters in Levelland. It asks that a local option election be called on the following issue: ‘For/Against the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption only.’
The committee paid $35,000 to the Texas Petition Strategies Inc. of Arlington to conduct the petition phase this winter.
