Grass fire burns 440 acres near Anton

Firefighters from six area fire departments battled a large grass fire Thursday afternoon near Anton.

Levelland firefighters were dispatched to the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

The fire broke out on FM 597 near El Paso Road.

Firefighters from Anton Smyer, Littlefield, Shallowater and West Carlisle worked together to bring the fire under control.

No structures were damaged, but Anton firefighters kept flames from burning at least one building.

Two county motor graders were used to carve fire breaks in the CRP grass to contain the fire, said Bill Durham, interim fire chief with Levelland.
