New trial starts for man on same change

A man whose trial ended in a mistrial last October was back in court again Tuesday, charged with the same offense.

Nathan Daniel Tijerina of Levelland is charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

His daughter, Tallulah, was unconscious and not breathing when she was admitted to the hospital emergency room here July 10, 2012.

Dr. Charles Hughes told jurors Tuesday that the child, who was not quite three months old at the time, was limp, not breathing and had a ‘gray color’ when she was brought to the ER by her mother.

Medical personnel began chest compressions to get oxygen into the baby’s lungs.

‘The baby was not breathing; the baby was unresponsive,’ Hughes said, adding that the child appeared to have been without oxygen for several minutes.

The child also had a large amount of fluid in its airway, and staff could not get a breathing tube in her, he said.

Hughes said the fluid was cloudy with a green tint.
