Dr. Marvin Baker’s legacy recalled with words, music

South Plains Collegeís longest serving president was remembered with thoughts, prayer, laughter and music  Friday.

Dr. Marvin Louis ìDocî Baker, who passed away Feb. 5 in Weatherford, was college president  here from 1961 to 1994.

The current president, Dr. Kelvin Sharp, told 100 people attending a memorial that Bakerís legacy continues to resonate more than two decades later.

Bakerís strong leadership still stands as a testament to community colleges across Texas, Sharp said.

ìMany of our traditions still reflect the standards of excellence set y Dr. Baker,î he said.

Former SPC Dean Earl Gerstenberger recalled that Baker was the youngest junior college president in Texas when he came to Levelland in 1961.
