Drought’s end possible in next few months

Is Hockley County out of the drought?

The answer to that may depend on who you talk to, as well as data available from the state.

The Texas Water Development Board’s weekly drought report for the week of Feb. 23-March 1 shows that both Hockley and Cochran counties are in a period of slight drought.

Terry County is listed as abnormally dry.

The snow and rain that have fallen here in recent months are making a big difference for Hockely County.

We’re still slightly below normal,î said Johnny Shepard, manager of Citizens-Shallowater Co-op Gin. I think the calculations still hang on you’re supposed to have normal precipitation for 12 months. Weíre only in the eight to 10 month period.

The ongoing moisture is making a big change for growers, he added.

For the first time since the drought started in 2011, the county has a winter soil moisture profile, Shepard said.

This has also been a much snowier winter than the past few years.
