Levelland High School students won top honors and pleased palates last weekend during a state cooking competition in Corpus Christi.
Sara Quintanilla, Adrianna Simmons and Morgan Klatt won ‘Best of Show’ in the group contest with their fanciful cake.
The cake, which had the theme ‘Day of the Dead,’ consisted of nine layers and used elements from the ‘Dia de los Muertos’ celebration in Mexico.
But the students decided to incorporate bright colors and flowers in their creation.
‘For the most part, we wanted to do something different,’ said Quintanilla. ‘We wanted something bright and colorful.’
The students used Styrofoam for each layer, coating it with fondant, a cooked sugar icing that hardened. Quintanilla then used food coloring to draw scenes and patterns on most of the layers. One layer shows two skeletons dancing and a saguaro cactus.
