The heavy rains that swamped the area early this week continued to impact the city in numerous ways.
Local residents were unable to call law enforcement officers for several hours Wednesday after a truck driver hit a fiber optic box outside the Law Enforcement Center.
Callers were still able to use the 911 communications line.
The police and sheriffís departments could not be contacted on their regular land phone lines for nearly five hours, said Police Chief Toney Cowan.
Workers from NTS Communications were able to make repairs at the site and service was restored.
An employee with Sodexo was driving through the LEC parking lot in an attempt to get to Gebo’s when he hit the NTS box. Water still covered Avenue H and the driver apparently failed to see the box, said Police Chief Toney Cowan.
