The sacrifices that members of the military made on behalf of their fellow Americans were remembered with songs, words and prayer Monday during the annual Memorial Day Observance in Levelland.
Peggy Gandy, who graduated from Levelland High School in 1957 and attended South Plains College, joined the U.S. Air Force in February 1959.
‘I was one of the few females who joined the service,’ said the guest speaker. ‘I joined and was sent to Lackland (Air Force Base),’ Gandy said. ‘Basic training was a piece of cake.’
After being trained as a filing clerk, she was stationed at Amarillo.
‘I joined the Air Force to see the world and I couldn’t even get out of Amarillo,’ Gandy said.
She was later stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, where she worked in accounting.
