A Burlington Northern & Santa Fe train derailed Monday evening west of Smyer.

The train was hauling a load of grain to the ethanol plant when the ground apparently gave way.

Four cars left the track on the south side of the rail bed while two others were at an angle.

Crews were dispatched to the scene and worked overnight to clear the cars and remove broken rails and ties.

The accident is under investigation.
