Train hauling grain derails near Smyer

Authorities responded to a train derailment Monday night west of Smyer.

No one was injured.

A Burlington Northern & Santa Fe train hauling grain to the Diamond Ethanol Ltd. plant derailed after 8 p.m. Monday, about two miles west of Smyer.

The train of 103 cars was traveling west when four rail cars fell over on the south side of the rail bed. Two other cars were leaning over.

It appeared that the ground beneath the ties and rails gave way.

Employees with Hulcher Services Inc. were dispatched to the scene, and they worked through the night to move rail cars and remove damaged wooden ties and rails.
