One man was killed and a woman injured early Saturday morning when their sport utility vehicle hit a pole east of Levelland.
The driver, 30-year-old Joshua Nathan Salazar of Levelland, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A passenger, Levelland resident Rachel Priddy Cruz, 32, was also not wearing a belt.
She was taken to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
The accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m., three miles east of Levelland on Cactus Road.
Salazar was westbound at a high rate of speed in a 2004 Honda CRV. His vehicle left the north side of the road, rolled on its left side and struck a utility pole. The vehicle came to a rest on its passenger side against the pole.
Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and the accident is still under investigation, according to the DPS.
The results of tests will not be available for several weeks.
