Three downtown sidewalk projects – but not one of the original three – will go ahead in the coming budget year, city council members agreed Monday.
Champion Sports owner Rann Mitchell urged the council to repair the sidewalk in front of his business, calling it the ìworst concrete in Levelland.’
‘I think y’all are going to bypass me again,’ Mitchell said, adding that the city could set aside funds for repairs to the sidewalk in front of his Houston Street business.
Erik Rejino, director of community development, reminded the council that it had agreed to fix three priorities earlier this year. They were the area in front of Mitchell’s business, the sidewalk in front of the News-Press and the area in front of Aaronís Furniture.
The city has $100,000 in the bank for those three projects, and it will add another $50,000 in the new budget year beginning Oct. 1.
However, the Texas Department of Transportation says it will tackle $3 million worth of sidewalk projects in Lubbock and area cities in a 24-month time frame. Part of that would include rebuilding the sidewalk in front of Champion Sports.
Rejino said the work should start in September/October but there is no guarantee that it will.
