Dr. Weerachai Wiri always knew that he wanted to be a physician. His father and two uncles were doctors.
The youngest of seven children, Wiri grew up in the southern part of Thailand.
After graduating from high school, he attended college in Bangkok for two years and then enrolled in medical college. He graduated four years later.
Wiri, who decided he wanted to be a surgeon, knew that he needed more training, so he looked abroad.
‘A lot of people back then wanted to go outside to learn more,’ he said. ‘So I picked out a hospital in St. Louis (Missouri) to do my internship in surgery.’
He moved to the United States in 1973 and trained in St. Louis for a year. Wiri then transferred to Washington, D.C., where he did surgery training for a year.
The hospital in Washington closed, so he looked for another hospital. He found one in the Bronx Lebanon Hospital in New York City.
