Investigation ongoing in death of city man

The Texas Rangers are investigating the case of a Levelland man who died after being arrested by police Tuesday.

Miguel A. Mendoza, 29, died after 5 p.m. at Covenant Hospital Levelland .

Justice of the Peace Linda Canon pronounced him dead at 5:55 p.m. and ordered an autopsy.

Two officers in a patrol vehicle stopped a Levelland Taxi vehicle in the 500 block of Collee Avenue after seeing that Mendoza was not wearing a seat belt.

One officer spoke to the cab driver while the second one spoke to Mendoza.

Mendoza acted suspiciously and refused to take his hands out of his pockets. He ran west in an attempt to cross College Avenue.
