Gunshot victim survives; police seek suspect

A Levelland man who was shot while driving Tuesday is recovering and has been released from the hospital.

Gilberto Holguin Vigil, 36, formerly of Morton, underwent surgery  Wednesday morning at a Lubbock hospital and was later released.

Meanwhile, police are seeing a ‘person of interest’ in connection with the shooting.

Vigil told detectives he was driving west on Texas 114 late Tuesday morning when a black truck pulled in front of him, almost hitting his Chevrolet Z71.

The victim said he saw the driverís side window roll down and a handgun appeared. He heard two gunshots and felt a warm feeling in his mouth. He said the first round hit his vehicle, according to a report.

His sport utility vehicle veered to the south of the road, hit the railroad tracks and exited a ditch on Avenue T.

A tire blew on his vehicle but he managed to drive to his home on Avenue I. His wife came outside and he told her what had happened. The two walked to Covenant Hospital Levelland and the emergency room.

Vigil was then transported to a Lubbock hospital.
