The Ropes High School Marching was welcomed with cheers and high fives Thursday in an assembly that marked their winning gold at the state band marching contest.
The ensemble won the first-ever six-man state band marching contest Tuesday in San Antonio.
High School Principal Tim Carter welcomed the ‘heroes’ in the gym and thanked everyone who supported them.
‘These kids have worked tirelessly,’ Carter said. ‘These kids have worked their tails off.’
He said the stress that the students faced escalated significantly once they were inside the Alamodome.
‘You really have to elevate your game. They were the most focused group of kids,’ he said.
‘They were ready to go, they were phenomenal.’
Carter read aloud a message from former Ropes band director Jerod Hon in which he praised the ensemble for their ‘great accomplishment.’
Donovan Ashcraft, the current band director, said he was overwhelmed by the win.
‘All I can say right now is ‘wow,” Ashcraft said in the packed gym. ‘This is probably a highlight of my career, and the highlight of all these kids.’
