New Open Carry Law to pose challenges

Texans will have to get used to a new sight Jan. 1 – people carrying handguns in public.

House Bill 910, which was signed into law in June by Gov. Greg Abbott, will allow people who have completed a four-hour training class to openly carry a handgun in a holster.

Individuals who are convicted felons or have been convicted of family violence will not be granted a license for an open carry.

Police Sgt. Craig Hancock said there are several things that people need to be aware of if they openly carry a handgun.

‘We need to stress the importance that if they’re asked by an officer to produce their handgun license,’ Hancock said. ‘They need to show that or they could be in violation of interference with public duties.’
