Former police chief turns self in after warrant issued

Ashley Everett Ramirez

The former Ropesville police chief turned himself in to authorities Tuesday  after grand jury indictments against him were unsealed.

Ashley Everett  Ramirez, 40, of Shallowater turned himself in shortly before noon Tuesday in Lubbock. He was booked into jail and then released shortly before 2 p.m. after posting bond.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest.

A grand jury indicted Ramirez Nov. 12 on three counts of tampering with evidence, three counts of theft of a firearm by a public servant and one county of abuse of official capacity.

The first two charges are third-degree felonies. The third one is a state jail felony.

Sealed indictments were returned after the grand jury deliberated for about two hours, said District Attorney Chris Dennis.
