Area unemployment rates rise and fall

Texas’ unemployment rate increased last month, going from a seasonally adjusted 4.2 percent in September to 4.4 percent in October.

It also rose slightly in Hockley County while declining in Cochran County.

‘Texas employers continue to contribute to the Texas economy by adding jobs, including 203,900 over the past year,’ said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. ‘Thanks to the innovation and efforts of employers in a range of industries, Texas workers continue to have greater opportunities to demonstrate their world class work ethic and skill set.’

While up in October, the stateís unemployment rate was below the national average of 5.0 percent.

The rate for Hockley County went from 4.0 percent in September to 4.1 percent in October.
The countyís jobless rate in October 2014 stood at 3.4 percent.

Hockley Countyís labor force was smaller last month than it was a year earlier.

In October 2014, 11,785 people were unemployed while 419 were out of work.

A total of 11,623 people were employed here last month, with 499 listed as unemployed.
