Christmas shopping here was both up and down last week compared to a year ago, according to retailers.
Bealls sold more merchandise on Thanksgiving Day than it did last Thanksgiving, said Malisa Cortez, store manager.
‘We actually did better than last year,’ Cortez said, adding that Thanksgiving is now Black Friday for the chain and not the day after.
Popular items this year include womenís boots and home appliances.
The store did not open until 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day but customers were already waiting two hours before the doors opened.
Store traffic on Friday was good, she said.
‘We were surprised that we had a good day due to the oil field,’ Cortez said. ‘We were kind of surprised.’
The wet weather that hit the county Thanksgiving Day and Friday hurt business, Shanna Saunders, owner of Our Stuff.
‘The weather played a huge part of that,’ Saunders said, adding that customer traffic on Black Friday was a fourth of what it was a year ago.
