Most crime categories increase in city in 2015

Crime went up again last year in Levelland compared to 2014.

The number of crimes increased in 17 of 20 categories, according to a report from the Levelland Police Department.

Some of the increases were significant.

Police investigated 69 aggravated assault cases last year, up from 36 in 2014.

Sexual assaults also jumped, going from 24 in 2014 to 47 in 2015.

No homicides occurred in 2014 but there were two last year.

One of them was a shooting in which officers shot and killed a man brandishing a knife.

A grand jury later cleared officers of any wrongdoing.

City police also responded to 146 cases of family violence, up considerably from 82 the previous year.

ìI donít know if itís the economy or what,î said Assistant Police Chief Tom McCain.

Thefts and other categories of crime increased as well.

Crimes for 2015 are listed first, followed by 2014 figures in brackets.

Robbery – 11 (four).

Assault – 134 (150).

Burglary of habitation – 90 (84).

Burglary of building – 57 (65).

Burglary of motor vehicle 51 (50).

Theft – 366 (289).

Forgery – 86 (65).

Unauthorized use of motor vehicle – 24 (16).

Criminal mischief – 178 (135).

DWI – 26 (33).

Driving while license suspended – 63 (60).

Weapons offense – 27 (10).

Public intoxication – 68 (48).

Disorderly conduct – 20 (17).

Drugs – 233 (128).

Miscellaneous offenses – 319 (289).

McCain attributed the increase in drug cases to the work done by two narcotics officers.
