Sheriff loses race in primary elections

An upset occurred Tuesday when Sheriff R.C. Cheek lost his re-election bid to former employee Ray Scifres.

Scifres received a total of 2,408 ballots to 1,574 for Cheek.

He will go on to the November election with no Democratic opponent.

In another highly contested race, District Attorney Christopher Dennis rolled over his opponent Richard Husen by a margin of 2,499-1,311.

Dennis also has no opponent in theNovember general election.

Election Administrator Cheryl Smart said the turnout, including  the early vote, totaled 4,462 voters, or about 33 percent of those eligible to vote.
