Levelland firefighters are on the scene of a large grass fire near the Spade Ranch in Smyer.

The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. Friday. The fire spread from east to west and began to threaten homes on the east side of FM 168.

At 3:45 p.m. Friday, firefighters were still trying to knock down the blaze.

Several agencies responded, including West Carlisle Fire/EMS, Smyer Volunteer Fire Department, Hockley County Sheriff’s Deputies, and the State Police.

Motorists are advised to be alert while traveling on Highway 114 west or east through Smyer and be aware of emergency vehicles and first responders. Avoid the area if at all possible.

The Hockley County Sheriff’s Department reported FM 168 north of Highway 114 would be closed until the fire was out. At 5:24 p.m., David Corder, Emergency Management Coordinator, said the crews were wrapping up the fire and units began leaving the area. FM 168 is now open again.
